Observations on March 2014 Graphic Books Chart - Noteworthy Backlist

Diamond's Top 300 Graphic Books Chart had 141 new books and 159 backlist books which had been on the charts before. Of those 159, 71 were Marvel books which seemed to be part of a big sale, including 35 different softcover Marvel Masterworks volumes, a few of which shipped more copies last month than they did in their initial month of publication. Of the remaining 88, there are 68 which have been on the charts enough over the last two years or since they've been published (whichever is shorter) that I classify them as perennials, including 36 which have been on the charts every month of their availability in that period.

So that leaves a more manageable list of 20 books which merit some greater attention.

The first group have been on the chart every month since they were published, that just wasn't long enough ago to qualify for the perennial list. Some of them will continue to appear on the list and join that list (almost certainly the WALKING DEAD and DEADPOOL books, based on past history) while others will drop off for the most part and only occasionally sell enough to make the Top 300, including the hardcovers which will eventually be replaced by softcovers by their publishers' normal marketing patterns.

WALKING DEAD TP VOL 19 MARCH TO WAR (IMA) : 1956 books
UNCANNY AVENGERS TP VOL 01 RED SHADOW (MAR) : 1317 books
SECRET SERVICE TP (MAR) : 1094 books
LOCKE & KEY HC VOL 06 ALPHA & OMEGA (IDW) : 998 books
ZERO TP VOL 01 AN EMERGENCY (IMA) : 728 books
DEADPOOL KILLS DEADPOOL TP (MAR) : 654 books
DEADPOOL TP VOL 03 GOOD BAD AND UGLY NOW (MAR) : 612 books
INJUSTICE GODS AMONG US HC VOL 01 (DC) : 572 books
FATALE TP VOL 04 PRAY FOR RAIN (IMA) : 524 books

A few other recent books haven't made the list every month since they were published. MANHATTAN PROJECTS might continue to appear most months, like the first two books do. GUARDIANS will almost certainly fall off in this format after the softcover edition come out in a few months. HIP HOP FAMILY TREE is an interesting case. It sold out on publication last November, and the second printing came out (and sold out) in March. So there's a good chance it'll show up again in a few months when the third printing comes out. It's not the type of material that typically becomes a permanent fixture in the direct market Top 300, but then neither is John Lewis' autobiographical MARCH which has been on the chart 7 of 8 months since it was published.

MANHATTAN PROJECTS TP VOL 03 (IMA) : 649 books
GUARDIANS OF GALAXY PREM HC VOL 02 ANGELA (MAR) : 743 books
HIP HOP FAMILY TREE GN VOL 01 (FAN) : 671 books

The last group are books more than a year old which show up on the list occasionally, but less than half the time. Sometimes it's obvious why they showed up in this month, like that WINTER SOLDIER book which ties in to a movie that just came out, or that DAREDEVIL book out the same month as the book relaunches with the same writer. That first ATTACK ON TITAN book is a special case, having been on the list for the last six months after being off the chart for over a year after it was first published. It's the only one of these likely to eventually fall into what I define as a perennial, the rest will show up a few times a year and sell steadily at the sub-Top 300 level the other months.

DAREDEVIL BY MARK WAID TP VOL 01 (MAR) : 1376 books
ATTACK ON TITAN GN VOL 01 (RAN) : 817 books
CAPTAIN AMERICA WINTER SOLDIER ULTIMATE COLLECTION TP (MAR) : 1029 books
MARVEL ZOMBIES TP VOL 01 (MAR) : 678 books
FABLES TP VOL 03 STORYBOOK LOVE (DC) : 540 books
SERENITY HC VOL 01 THOSE LEFT BEHIND (DAR) : 537 books
SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING TP BOOK 01 (DC) : 666 books
ALL STAR SUPERMAN TP (DC) : 514 books

Observations on Feb. 2014 Diamond GN Chart - Backlist

So, of the Top 300 books on Diamond's February 2014 Graphic Novel chart, 122 were new items (25 DC, 28 Marvel, 69 Other) and 92 were Marvel backlist that appears to have been heavily discounted. Of the other 86 backlist listings, 64 are on the list of what I'd call perennials, books which have a 50% or better record of appearing on the Top 300 over the last two years (I might refine that definition later). That leaves another 22 that are worth a closer look.

HELLBOY TP VOL 01 SEED OF DESTRUCTION (DAR) : 1054 books
HELLBOY TP VOL 02 WAKE THE DEVIL (DAR) : 998 books
HELLBOY TP VOL 07 THE TROLL WITCH & OTHERS (DAR) : 444 books
HELLBOY TP VOL 11 MASKS AND MONSTERS (DAR) : 450 books
HELLBOY TP VOL 12 THE STORM AND THE FURY (DAR) : 470 books

The whole HELLBOY series seems to generally sell well but under the radar of the Top 300, though the first book makes the list every few months, and by estimates of Diamond's year-end figures sells 3-4000 copies in the direct market every year. It looks like there was a concerted effort to bring all the volumes back into print in time for the 20th anniversary of the character, which could explain the unusual presence of five scattered volumes.

BATMAN MAD LOVE AND OTHER STORIES TP (DC) : 1141 books
FABLES TP VOL 03 STORYBOOK LOVE (DC) : 442 books
FABLES TP VOL 19 SNOW WHITE (DC) : 445 books
FABLES DELUXE EDITION HC VOL 01 (DC) : 483 books
PLANETARY OMNIBUS HC (DC) : 557 books
PREACHER TP BOOK 01 (DC) : 757 books

MAD LOVE has been around for a while, selling steadily but mostly outside the Top 300. The big surge here is probably due to the new HARLEY QUINN series getting some attention on the character. FABLES VOL 03 pops up occasionally, not quite as often as the first two books. FABLES VOL 19 is the latest one, and those tend to show up for a few months before falling below the Top 300 threshold. It looks like the FABLES DELUXE VOL 01 was out of print for a bit, so that's catching up to some accumulated demand. PLANETARY OMNIBUS came out in January, so this will probably be the last time it makes the list, though it's already sold very well for a $75 book. PREACHER has been getting some attention from the movement on a TV show, which would explain why the first book has been selling especially well lately, though the series has been a decent seller in one form or another since it began. If the TV show actually happens the whole series will become a fixture on the chart for a while.

CAPTAIN AMERICA WINTER SOLDIER ULTIMATE COLLECTION TP (MAR) : 599 books
DEADPOOL KILLS DEADPOOL TP (MAR) : 600 books
DEADPOOL TP VOL 03 GOOD BAD AND UGLY NOW (MAR) : 580 books
SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TP VOL 04 NECESSARY EVIL (MAR) : 656 books
ULTIMATES 3 TP WHO KILLED SCARLET WITCH (MAR) : 634 books

Pretty obvious why that particular CAPTAIN AMERICA book has been selling well lately, and will probably stop selling as well soon. The previous books in the DEADPOOL KILLS, plain DEADPOOL and SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN lines have all been steady sellers, so I expect these ones to continue appearing for a while. The ULTIMATES 3 book just got a new printing, so probably won't be a regular on the list.

ATTACK ON TITAN GN VOL 01 (RAN) : 821 books
ATTACK ON TITAN GN VOL 02 (RAN) : 614 books
ATTACK ON TITAN GN VOL 03 (RAN) : 462 books

ATTACK ON TITAN was slow to catch on, but has been consistently charting for the last few months, here and on the BookScan reports of the mass-market. I'd expect at least the early books to keep showing up on a regular basis, especially once the anime is released in English.

JOHNNY HOMICIDAL MANIAC DIRECTORS CUT SC (SLA) : 627 books
SQUEE TP (SLA) : 482 books

These two have been steady sellers for years, mostly under the Top 300 threshold. They were both relisted in the January Previews so probably picked up some extra orders from that.

NEMO HEART OF ICE HC (TOP) : 607 books

A slight surge in sales as the second volume ROSES OF BERLIN is coming in March (out now), so the first got a catalog listing in January. it'll probably make the chart a few more times this year, and again when the third book comes out.

The Marvel Backlist Bargain Flood of Feb. 2014

Just a few words on the abnormal amount of Marvel backlist items on Diamond's February 2014 charts. That's happened a few times before, Marvel decides to liquidate vast sections of their backlist (DC has also had a few similar mass liquidations show up on the charts).  I'm not sure how they do it now, but I know a few years ago it was done through progressively higher discounts. One week retailers get an option to order from a large list of books at 70% off. Books that sell out come off the list, the next week remaining books are 75% off. Eventually everything sells, even if some of it is over 90% off. You end up seeing a lot of these books at conventions, from dealers selling paperbacks for $5, standard hardcovers for $10, oversized hardcovers for $20, with no shortage of inventory. You can find a lot of them now from on-line sellers offering them at half-price or lower. If past is prologue, if you really want any of them, now is a good time to order, you'll never get a better combination of price and availability.

It looks like discounts in that range were the order of business for 92 of the items Marvel had on the Top 300 for February. Those books fall into three groups.

39 of the books were from Marvel's ESSENTIAL line of thick black and white softcovers. The line appears to have wrapped up, at least there haven't been any books released in a few months, and none are on the schedule.

There were also 39 books from Marvel's line of slightly smaller than standard trim size (but larger than digest size) 5 1/2-in. x 8-in softcover line, which they somewhat confusingly labelled as "graphic novel trade paperbacks", or "GN TP". That format also appears to be done, with only a few releases in 2013 wrapping up some lines and nothing on the horizon.

Lastly, there were 14 books in Marvel's "premiere hardcover" line, mostly thin collections of some of their better selling monthly comics, published quickly after each story arc ends and replaced within a year with a softcover edition with the same contents. The softcover editions of most of these books have been or soon will be released, so retailers buying them are probably spending slightly less than they would for those softcovers.

UNCANNY AVENGERS PREM HC VOL 02 APOCALYPSE TWINS : 616 copies

Now, all this brings up a few interesting points to ponder. First off, Marvel seems to be doing much better on the supply side than they were a few years ago. It used to be pretty reliable a few years ago that they'd quickly sell out of any book that there was any demand for. It seems they do invest in a generous overprint now, and have books available for a while.

Unfortunately, I think they might have problem on the demand side. Maybe they trained retailers too well to not expect continued availability, and to order whatever they needed up-front. The frequency of the liquidations might also have trained retailers and buyers to hold off on ordering older books, since they might be available at steep discounts soon enough.

Diamond Graphic Novels Chart - Backlist stats

As we wait for the February 2014 numbers from Diamond, an overview of the Diamond Graphic Novel chart and the role of backlist/re-order items on it.  For the purposes of this discussion, I'm considering backlist any item making the chart after its initial month of release.

Until 2003, Diamond generally only listed newly released items on its Graphic Novel chart, back when the charts were based on pre-orders from retailers.  When they changed to charts based on actual invoiced sales in March 2003, they began including backlist items as well. However, at the time the Graphic Novel chart only went to #50, so there were generally only a handful of books a month making the charts after their initial release, and a lot of new releases didn't make the chart at all.

In February 2004, Diamond expanded the list to 100, which added a few more backlist items making the charts every month, as well as a lot more new releases.

In November 2008 they tripled the list to 300, which is where it's been ever since (I think they might be due for another expansion, with the comics chart having recently gone to 400). At 300 entries, the list generally goes down to about 500 copies or lower in estimated sales, which means that almost all books from DC and Marvel make the list in their first month of release, as do most from other medium sized publishers, although all of them occasionally have a book which will fall below, often expensive books or books where the primary market isn't the North American direct sales market. That also added a lot of backlist items to the chart every month.  It varies, but on average it seems you can expect about 60% new items and 40% backlist items on the list.

And of course that backlist isn't evenly distributed. As I discussed before, there are over 100 evergreen books which make the chart more often than not, some of them showing up every month, sometimes making up half or more of the top backlist items. On the other hand, looking at books since the list expanded to 300, over 85% of new books listed will never reach the top 300 again. Another 9% will only reach the list twice. That second entry is often either the month after initial release, which could just be one side of the country getting the book from Diamond a few weeks later than the other due to shipping delays, or over a year later, which often means that the remaining stock was liquidated at heavy discounts. Only about 4% of books have a significant presence on the chart beyond the quarter they were released, and maybe 2% will be likely to still hit the charts a year after they come out.

That doesn't mean, of course, that all those other books don't sell at all. As discussed before, you can reasonably continue to sell some 3000 copies a year through Diamond and still never make the monthly top 300.

Diamond Graphic Novels Chart - Below the Top 300

Since I spent a few posts talking about books that almost always show up on Diamond's Top 300 Graphic Novel chart, I figured it was worth looking at examples of books that never do, but still sell well, just to emphasize the importance of the so-called "long tail" and the fact that the Top 300 isn't everything.

Some background. Diamond currently reports the Top 300 books they categorize as graphic novels every month, plus some months their "small publishers" chart includes a few more entries below #300. This includes both new releases and backlist items. The cut-off for appearing on the list varies, of course. In 2013 estimates of sales of the #300 book ranged from 327 copies to 510 copies. What this means is that theoretically a book could have come in at #301 every month, tied with the book above it, shipped 4963 copies and yet never appear on the Top 300. Of course, that's statistically unlikely.

However, Diamond also releases a Top 1000 for the full year. On the Comics side there are no real surprises, it goes down to 27,800 copies estimated sales, so it's pretty much stuff that was in the Top 100 every month, with a few books moving up or down a few spots from what you'd expect based on the monthly charts, indicating a few thousand reorders or later printings falling below the Top 300, or adjustments for returns.

The graphic novel list, on the other hand, goes down to 1600 copies, and the nature of the market means it's perfectly feasible for books which rarely if ever make the top 300 in any single month to make that chart, just by selling more than an average of 133 copies a month. That might not seem like a lot of copies, but 1600 copies a year, just in the non-returnable direct market, for a book where all the initial creative and production costs are paid for is probably a decent enough sales velocity for most publishers to keep a book in stock, and probably call for a new printing when sold out.

It's hard to do an exact count, since Diamond often makes small changes in the listed titles of books, but I'd say there are a little over 100 books on the yearly Top 1000 for 2013 which were never on the monthly charts during the year.

The highest of those appears to be Marvel's FEAR ITSELF TP, a collection of the 2011 crossover event. It ranked #392 for the year, selling around 3100 copies, or slightly over 250 each month on average.

Just a few more highlights from books in this category, starting with Marvel since we're already there. I've identified 23 Marvel books, and almost one-third of them are Deadpool books. A few older best-sellers like WOLVERINE ORIGIN, MARVEL 1602 and HULK: WORLD WAR HULK are also there, as is the hardcover edition of the CIVIL WAR crossover which also sells well in softcover. There's one collection of older material the first Marvel Masterworks edition of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, which sells about 1700 copies for the year.

As you'd expect, DC has a most of the books in this category, many under the Vertigo imprint which is known for its vigorous backlist program. The top one is Y THE LAST MAN VOL 4 SAFEWORD, selling around 3000 copies (250 a month), with the prior volumes selling more and making the Top 300 at least once and the next six volumes selling enough to make the annual Top 1000, with VOL 10 selling around 1700 copies.  There are also multiple volumes of FABLES, TRANSMETROPOLITAN, AMERICAN VAMPIRE, SWEET TOOTH and single volumes of several other Vertigo series, with the later ones probably selling steadily at a slightly lower rate.

On the DC super-hero side, lots of Batman, some Green Lantern, several of the old "Crisis" books (CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, IDENTITY CRISIS, INFINITE CRISIS). The first volume of the kids book TINY TITANS still sells at a steady pace, with about 2200 copies in the direct market several years after it was first published.

Image and Dark Horse both have a number of books in this category.  From Image it's a selection of WALKING DEAD hardcovers, a few volumes of MORNING GLORIES and single volumes of SPAWN, INVINCIBLE and KING CITY. Dark Horse has several BUFFY books and single early volumes of THE GOON, AXE COP, SIN CITY, MASS EFFECT and STAR WARS CLONE WARS.

Various other publishers have one or two books. Archaia has two MOUSE GUARD books, Avatar has the second CROSSED book and NEONOMICON. Dynamite has the first two volumes of THE BOYS. IDW has the first volume of the current TMNT series and the second hardcover volume of LOCKE AND KEY.

Other publishers have single volumes of SCOTT PILGRIM (Oni), BLACK BUTLER (Yen), ASSASSIN'S CREED (Titan) and LEGEND OF ZELDA (Viz).

Diamond Graphic Novels Chart - Semi-Perennials and more

Previously, books which appeared on every monthly Diamond Top 300 in 2013, and those that appeared in 10 or 11 months.  Now those that appeared in 8 or 9 months (sometimes still all the months they were available, for new releases), 23 books in all.

Dark Horse
AVATAR LAST AIRBENDER TP VOL 04 SEARCH PART 1 - 14234 copies, 9/10 months (around 1580 per month)

Appears to be quite solid, following the same sales pattern as Vol 1, so I'm sure we'll see it again for a while.  And Vol 7 starts another storyline, so if the pattern holds it'll sell well throughout 2014.

DC
AQUAMAN TP VOL 01 THE TRENCH (N52) - 8527 copies, 8/8 months (around 1070 per month)
ARKHAM ASYLUM ANNIVERSARY ED SC - 5087 copies, 9/12 months (around 570 per month)
BATMAN HC VOL 02 THE CITY OF OWLS (N52) - 16505 copies, 8/10 months (around 2060 per month)
NIGHTWING TP VOL 01 TRAPS AND TRAPEZES (N52) - 6135 copies, 8/12 months (around 770 per month)
SANDMAN TP VOL 03 DREAM COUNTRY NEW ED - 5440 copies, 8/12 months (around 680 per month)
TRANSMETROPOLITAN TP VOL 01 BACK ON THE STREET - 4580 copies, 9/12 months (around 510 per month)
Y THE LAST MAN TP VOL 01 UNMANNED - 7754 copies, 9/12 months (around 860 per month)

Another batch of the more popular "New 52" books.  The CITY OF OWLS hardcover was on the charts steadily until the softcover came out, which will probably replace it on the chart next year. Old standby ARKHAM ASYLUM isn't going anywhere, and SANDMAN might actually pick up some steam if they ever release another issue of the SANDMAN OVERTURE series.

We also have the first volumes of two long-running Vertigo books. Most of the subsequent volumes of those usually sell below the threshold to be on the top 300, but steadily enough that sometimes they show up on the year-end list. For example, Y VOL 04 and Y VOL 10 never appear on the top 300 in 2013, but John Jackson Miller's year-end estimate is that they shipped around 3000 and 1700 copies respectively through Diamond.  Which makes sense, that means they averaged 250 and 140 copies per month, well below the threshold to make the chart, but enough to add up over time.

IDW
LOCKE & KEY TP VOL 01 WELCOME TO LOVECRAFT - 7228 copies, 9/12 months (around 800 per month)

The first IDW book that's close to being a perennial. It'll be interesting to see if it can sustain sales like this now that the serialization is over.  Sometimes books tend to fade away after that point, other times they become permanent fixtures. By the way, for reference, John Jackson Miller's estimate of total direct market sales for the book are 7700 copies, so it averages about 150 copies on the three months it didn't make the top 300.

If the bubble doesn't burst by then, expect MY LITTLE PONY to join or replace this on the list for 2014.

Image
FATALE TP VOL 01 DEATH CHASES ME - 5552 copies, 9/12 months (around 620 per month)
MANHATTAN PROJECTS TP VOL 02 - 10947 copies, 9/9 months (around 1220 per month)
REVIVAL TP VOL 01 YOU'RE AMONG FRIENDS - 6975 copies, 9/12 months (around 780 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 11 FEAR THE HUNTERS - 7424 copies, 9/12 months (around 820 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 12 LIFE AMONG THEM - 6904 copies, 9/12 months (around 770 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 13 TOO FAR GONE - 6777 copies, 9/12 months (around 750 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 14 NO WAY OUT - 6833 copies, 9/12 months (around 760 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 15 WE FIND OURSELVES - 7351 copies, 9/12 months (around 820 per month)

The balance of the WALKING DEAD books from the middle of the run, selling a little bit less the early and more recent once, but better than 90% of everything else. A few other books there that seem to have potential to keep appearing on the list on a regular basis.

Marvel
DEADPOOL TP VOL 01 DEAD PRESIDENTS NOW - 12979 copies, 8/8 months (around 1620 per month)
INFINITY GAUNTLET TP - 5340 copies, 9/12 months (around 590 per month)
KICK-ASS 2 TP - 10228 copies, 8/10 months (around 1280 per month)
KICK-ASS TP - 5856 copies, 8/12 months (around 730 per month)
SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TP VOL 01 MY OWN WORST ENEMY NOW - 9459 copies, 8/8 months (around 1180 per month)
X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST TP - 6960 copies, 9/12 months (around 770 per month)

DEADPOOL and SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN appear to be the two big successes after HAWKEYE of Marvel's current book program.  It probably helps that those books go to softcover first (eventually followed by a thicker hardcover), instead of a quick thin hardcover followed by a softcover almost a year later. INFINITY GAUNTLET got a big bump up to near-perennial status thanks to the Avengers film, and Marvel seems to be doing a better job of keeping it available. The KICK-ASS books probably benefited from the second movie, unless there's a third movie I'd expect those books to start fading away.

X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST benefits from the upcoming movie taking the title and some plot points from the story, and also from being a well regarded run of comics that Marvel only recently started to keep available in a suitable format. Unfortunately, Marvel is getting ready to obfuscate the issue before the movie by releasing a hardcover also called X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, not with the contents of the softcover (the original two issue story and surrounding issues of the comic) but rather the original two issue stories and all the later often misguided sequels and prequels.  Seriously instead of a simple solid run of early 1980s X-MEN, the book they want to put in front of people has "X-MEN (1963) #141, UNCANNY X-MEN (1963) #142, X-MEN ANNUAL (1970) #14, EXCALIBUR (1988) #52 and #66-67, and WOLVERINE: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST #1-3; and material from FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #23, NEW MUTANTS ANNUAL #6, X-FACTOR ANNUAL #5 and HULK: BROKEN WORLDS #2".  Who thought that was a good idea?

Diamond Graphic Novels Chart - Near and Future Perennials

Last time I looked at 25 books which made Diamond's top 300 Graphic Novel chart every month of 2013.  This time the books which just missed that, making the chart 10 or 11 months of the year.  Sometimes this is because the books were first published during 2013, so obviously unavailable in the early months.  Sometimes books will be briefly out of print, when one printing sells out before the next is ready. Sometimes the books will just fall outside of the top 300 for a month.  The threshold to make the top 300 varies from month to month, going from as low as 327 to as high as 510, so it's easy enough to fall below a few times but still have substantial sales. There are twenty books from five publishers in this category.

Boom
ADVENTURE TIME TP VOL 02 - 14673 copies, 10/11 months (around 1470 per month)

Pretty much following in the footsteps of Volume 1, at a slightly reduced rate, I'd expect it to keep making the chart more often then not, but not every month, for the next little while, or until the bubble bursts.

Dark Horse
AVATAR LAST AIRBENDER TP VOL 01 PROMISE PART 1 - 6630 copies, 11/12 months (around 600 per month)

This line has been a pretty consistent seller for Dark Horse for two years now, and is even bigger in the mass-market.  Looks like they did well to pick up the series after the stench of the live action movie wore off.

DC
BATMAN TP VOL 01 THE COURT OF OWLS (N52) - 24273 copies, 10/10 months (around 2430 per month)
JUSTICE LEAGUE TP VOL 01 ORIGIN (N52) - 17300 copies, 11/12 months (around 1570 per month)
BATMAN THE LONG HALLOWEEN TP - 13246 copies, 10/12 months (around 1320 per month)
FABLES TP VOL 01 LEGENDS IN EXILE NEW ED - 10093 copies, 11/12 months (around 920 per month)
V FOR VENDETTA TP - 9144 copies, 11/12 months (around 830 per month)
WONDER WOMAN TP VOL 01 BLOOD (N52) - 8420 copies, 10/12 months (around 840 per month)
BATMAN EARTH ONE HC - 7385 copies, 10/12 months (around 740 per month)
KINGDOM COME TP NEW EDITION - 7059 copies, 10/12 months (around 710 per month)
BATMAN KNIGHTFALL TP NEW ED VOL 01 - 6709 copies, 11/12 months (around 610 per month)
V FOR VENDETTA BOOK AND MASK SET - 6478 copies, 10/12 months (around 650 per month)
JOKER HC - 6200 copies, 10/12 months (around 620 per month)

Mix of stuff from DC.  The top-line "New 52" stuff seems to be doing well in their paperback releases following successful hardcover editions.  A few long-time perennials like LONG HALLOWEEN and KINGDOM COME aren't going anywhere. If you combine the two versions of V FOR VENDETTA it remains one of DC's top books, and would probably easily make the list every month, but people gots to have their corporate rebel masks. Original hardcovers BATMAN EARTH ONE and JOKER have had good runs, but might be getting to the point where being replaced by cheaper softcovers would be a good idea.

Image
WALKING DEAD COMPENDIUM TP VOL 01 - 13777 copies, 11/12 months (around 1150 per month)
WALKING DEAD COMPENDIUM TP VOL 02 - 8840 copies, 10/12 months (around 880 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 10 WHAT WE BECOME - 8811 copies, 11/12 months (around 800 per month)

Surprisingly very little from Image in this range, which I guess means they do a pretty good job of keeping their most in-demand books available.  And those WALKING DEAD COMPENDIA are US$60 books, so for them to sell that consistently is remarkable on several levels.

Marvel
HAWKEYE TP VOL 01 MY LIFE AS WEAPON NOW - 24401 copies, 10/10 months (around 2440 per month)
AVENGERS VS X-MEN TP AVX - 13306 copies, 10/10 months (around 1330 per month)
DEADPOOL KILLS MARVEL UNIVERSE TP - 12228 copies, 11/12 months (around 1110 per month)
WOLVERINE OLD MAN LOGAN TP - 7470 copies, 11/12 months (around 680 per month)

Mostly recent releases (HAWKEYE v1 and AVX released in 2013, DEADPOOL KILLS MU in late 2012), we'll see if they have the legs to be true evergreens.  I'd bet on HAWKEYE and DEADPOOL over AVX.  Except for CIVIL WAR it doesn't seem Marvel crossovers have staying power. OLD MAN LOGAN has been selling steadily in this format since 2010, it seems to be what the market has embraced as the starter Wolverine book, even moreso than the 1980s mini-series which was partly adapted for the last movie.

Diamond Graphic Novels Chart - Perennials

My favourite of the regular charts is the Diamond "Graphic Novel" chart. Over on the periodical comics side, things are mostly predictable once a series launches.  There's going to be a big drop-off with #2, a smaller one with #3, eventually the series will either keep dropping fast until cancelled or settle into a 1% to 3% drop per issue, so predictable that it's become a running joke, "standard attrition". Every now and then there'll be a crossover or gimmick which will bump up sales, which will almost always be followed by a corresponding drop after the event which will drop the sales trend back in line. It's the rare book which maintains steady sales for an extended period, and an exceeding rare one which increases sales month after month.

Comparatively the "Graphic Novel" side is much more fluid. By the way Diamond seems to define the terms somewhat capriciously, but generally will match at least two of the three criteria: bound instead of stapled, priced $9.95 or higher, having an ISBN. Probably 99% of releases fall firmly on one side or the other, but there are some that could go either way. A good number of the listings each month are re-orders of books which came out before, especially since Diamond increased the number of books they list from 100 to 300 back in 2008. I'll work up some more detailed numbers later, but about 40% of the listings each month are backlist items. Of course, those aren't spread equally.  It looks like about 85% of books only make the charts once and then drop off, another 10% make the charts twice and are never seen from again (and a few of those it looks like the second appearance is just the publisher liquidating excess inventory at bargain prices, the direct market equivalent of remaindering). A very few books show up more often, and add substantially to their first month sales. And then there are a handful which will continue to show up more often then not, often selling better than most new releases. So a quick look at some perennial evergreen sellers.

There were 25 books from four publishers which made Diamond's top 300 list for every month of 2013

Boom
ADVENTURE TIME TP VOL 01 - 19349 copies (around 1610 per month)

A fairly new entry on the list, first published in late 2012. Shows no real sign of slowing down, and the subsequent volumes frequently show up (though not every month).

DC
BATMAN THE KILLING JOKE SPECIAL ED HC - 23366 copies (around 1950 per month)
BATMAN HUSH COMPLETE TP - 16045 copies (around 1340 per month)
BATMAN DARK KNIGHT RETURNS TP - 14703 copies (around 1230 per month)
SANDMAN TP VOL 01 PRELUDES & NOCTURNES NEW ED - 13050 copies (around 1090 per month)
WATCHMEN TP - 11440 copies (around 950 per month)
SUPERMAN RED SON TP - 11345 copies (around 950 per month)
BATMAN YEAR ONE DELUXE SC - 11196 copies (around 930 per month)
SANDMAN TP VOL 02 THE DOLLS HOUSE NEW ED - 8134 copies (around 680 per month)
BLACKEST NIGHT TP - 7852 copies (around 650 per month)

Pretty much what you'd expect from DC.  Six of the nine books are from 20-30 years ago and have been selling pretty consistently ever since (with THE KILLING JOKE joining that list late with the new edition coming out in 2008, but even then the original "prestige format" version was one of the few books in that format DC kept in print, with at least 14 known printings).  Of the more recent stuff, HUSH is pretty much designed to be a standalone intro to Batman, and BLACKEST NIGHT is a fairly straightforward event book.  I wouldn't be surprised it if stops being a consistent top 300 entry soon. RED SON is a bit mystifying, but I guess it's a standalone somewhat attractive Superman book, which is an unfortunate rarity, and the writer is more popular now than when he wrote it.

Image
SAGA TP VOL 01 - 60650 copies (around 5050 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 01 DAYS GONE BYE - 55633 copies (around 4640 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 02 MILES BEHIND US - 32758 copies (around 2730 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 03 SAFETY BEHIND BARS - 22587 copies (around 1880 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 17 SOMETHING TO FEAR - 21318 copies (around 1780 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 04 HEARTS DESIRE - 17934 copies (around 1490 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 05 BEST DEFENSE - 14811 copies (around 1230 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 06 SORROWFUL LIFE - 12571 copies (around 1050 per month)
MANHATTAN PROJECTS TP VOL 01 SCIENCE BAD - 12497 copies (around 1040 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 07 THE CALM BEFORE - 11407 copies (around 950 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 08 MADE TO SUFFER - 10749 copies (around 900 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 16 A LARGER WORLD - 10467 copies (around 870 per month)
WALKING DEAD TP VOL 09 HERE WE REMAIN - 9908 copies (around 830 per month)
CHEW TP VOL 01 - 8644 copies (around 720 per month)

WALKING DEAD is of course what you'd expect, and much discussed elsewhere. The early volumes will continue to sell, the most recent ones will probably drop off a bit, maybe not chart every month, as they're replaced by newer volumes. SAGA is doing remarkably well, and if anything seems to be gaining steam as more new volumes are published. The later volumes of MANHATTAN PROJECTS are also doing well, and CHEW is solid, especially considering the more modest sales it has in serialized form compared to the other books.

Marvel
CIVIL WAR TP - 8972 copies (around 750 per month)

And of course Marvel has always had a reputation for not being able to keep things in print, so the only surprise here is that there wasn't at least one month in the year where this book wasn't available. Anyway, CIVIL WAR seems to have a reputation as the Marvel crossover that reads fairly well with no tie-ins, has all the big-name characters and is attractively drawn, so no surprise that it keeps selling.

And those are the books which you can currently bet on being on the chart every month.  Later, the books which charted on the top 300 in 2013 almost every month, missing only once or twice.
